What to wear?

It’s getting colder, it’s getting wetter, so what to do? Inspired by Graham’s discussion on Biker’s Delight we were wondering what to wear now? Are you still in summer cycling mode or have you already made the switch to hat, gloves, trousers and waterproofs? Let me tell you where I am.
Firstly, I must admit to a slightly unusual tactic when it comes to rain – I wear less clothes rather than more so if I do get wet I just dry off quicker. This is not always sensible and does tend to mean that if it rains particularly heavily then I spend the whole day soaked. Which is not too much fun.
Secondly, I don’t get that cold normally especially when cycling around so tend to only wear a t-shirt. Clearly that would be insane now so have added another layer but not anything thick otherwise tend to get too hot. Cycle at a decent speed and you can shed those extra layers.
So far I have made only three additions to my cycling ensemble due to the weather:
- Lightweight waterproof jacket: This is not really to keep the rain off but more for cycling home at night because otherwise the wind cuts right through me. At the moment using an old hiking jacket but thinking of switching to high vis cycling version.
- A “Buff” / Tubular garment: Totally weird names for something that’s incredibly flexible and useful. Can use it to keep neck warm, or wear as bandana or ear warmers or wristband or…the list goes on.
- Gloves: Fingerless of course because it’s not that cold anyway and is probably more of a comfort thing.
Let me know what changes you’ve made to your cycling outfit…
