Second hand and used bicycle buying guide
Union Cycle Works are go!

Going Going Bike loves bikes. Shocking we know! But more than that we admire people who use bikes to be a force for good. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Union Cycle Works as they’re creating beautiful bespoke bikes for people and at the same time working with disadvantaged people from diverse backgrounds.
Based in an old railway arch in the Deptford Project, 121-123 Deptford High Street, SE8 4NS, Union Cycle Works are a not-for-profit co-operative cycling project in the heart of Deptford, South-East London. They are a community cycling space, running innovative cycling events and workshops for Deptford residents and the wider cycling community.
Core to their project is the focus on working with disadvantaged people. Cycling and cycle maintenance can be key in supporting individuals in developing personal, social and practical skills and they have been working with people from challenging backgrounds and complex lives for the past 2 years.
Central to their work with disadvantaged individuals are the cycle maintenance courses, which cover all key aspects of cycle maintenance and each participant will work on a recycled bike, stripping it down and re-building it.
Union Cycle Works is an associated partner with The Margins Project, a homeless project based in North London. It has been running for 14 years, providing services and facilities for those homeless and in-crisis. The key strategy is training and skills development, working to support vulnerable people to maintain sustainable lives away from the streets.
At the Union Cycle Works they’ve got a lovely railway arch, some nice tools and some great bikes. That stuff aside, the Union Cycle Works is most importantly a bunch of dedicated people working together to make great bikes and help people!
You’ll be seeing a number of joint activities in the coming months but in the meantime if you have any unwanted parts/frames/bikes or if you want to buy a personalised ride from a great home get in touch with them! For more photos courtesy of Daniel Morgan check out flickr.
