Promoting cycling can be community led

ShareThis

Aberdeen

Aberdeen City Council has launched a unique community-led approach to getting more people to cycle in the city. Local residents will have a direct involvement in how cycling is developed and promoted locally.

Applications are being invited from community representatives with proposals illustrating how their area would benefit from a cycling initiative with one local community eventually being chosen to receive funding for their project. The closing date for applications is Tuesday 28 January 2011.

Convener of the Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Kate Dean said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for community representatives, perhaps working with a local business or school, to present to us their ideas and ambitions to create a more cycle friendly community. This could be anything from providing cycle training or new maps to developing or improving cycle lanes or paths.”

Once the most appropriate area has been selected, a Community Cycle Challenge project team (funded by The North East of Scotland Transport Partnership) will work with that community to establish what is required and how it can be delivered.
