London Bicycle Film Festival

London B F F

Some upcoming events for the culture vultures among you, with of course a cycle theme. You wouldn’t expect anything less.

First up is the ever popular London Bicycle Film Festival, the biggest of its kind in the UK. The Festival kicks off on October 6th with the UK Premiere of Racing Towards Red Hook, the story of three cyclists of diverse backgrounds competing in one of New York City’s biggest urban cycling events, the 2011 Red Hook Criterium.

Another feature to look out for during the Festival is Sunchasers, a documentary which explores the world of competitive cycling through the lives of three disabled women, each in distinct periods of their cycling careers as they prepare for the Paralympics.

On Sunday October 9, the Festival will be screening The Wheels of Chance. Dating back to 1922, the film is the tale of an inept draper’s assistant on a cycling holiday, who falls in love with a young woman cyclist who has run away.

All film screenings take place at the Barbican Centre (EC2Y 8DS).

More than just films

Aside from the films, there will be a kick-off concert at the Barbican featuring The New Cassettes on October 6. In and around the Barbican, they will be other bicycle-themed events including Rollapaluza Roller Racing, a Fixed Tricks competition, a bike tyre pumping competition and a Bicycle Themed Pub Quiz at Look Mum No Hands Café on Sunday the 9th to close the Festival.

Tickets can be purchased through the Barbican Box office at www.barbican.org.uk/film

Photography exhibition

Another event, also in London, is City Cycle Style, a month long photography exhibition at the Royal Exchange in the City of London. The exhibition captures 40 of the Capital’s most stylish cyclists on their two-wheeled transport of choice from vintage and fixed-gear to classic lightweight and Pashley bicycles.

Leading fashion photographer Horst A. Friedrichs is the snapper behind the photos which features personalities such as Boris Johnson and Sir. Paul Smith, the British fashion designer.

The City Cycle Style exhibition is a 24 hour outdoor gallery on the east side or back entrance of The Royal Exchange and runs from 28 September – 29 October 2011.
