Leicester taskforce shows the way forward

Bicycle Friendly

Given the problems that London Cycling Campaign and other cycling campaigners are having with trying to convince Transport for London and Boris Johnson to make London’s roads safer for cycling it is great to see that at least one city is taking its responsibilities towards cyclists seriously.

Leicester City Council is setting up a taskforce involving cyclists to help it redesign parts of the city to make it more bike friendly.  The Council will coordinate a “Roads for People” project that will visit problems areas in Leicester and discuss ideas for making them safer and more accessible for cyclists.

The project will involve officials from the Council, plus local cycling groups and other stakeholders. Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is also involved.

Cycle friendly Leicester

It is no surprise that the project involves Leicester City Council’s cycling co-ordinator Andy Salkeld. Andy is particularly well known in cycling infrastructure circles for his work with the annual Building Cycling Cultures workshop in Leicester.

Andy, who is part of the working party, told the Leicester Mercury: “Workshop stakeholders and the council aims to use the plans to stimulate ideas, generate a consensus and design solutions that resolve some of the strategic barriers to safer cycling and walking.”

Rise in numbers

The number of people cycling in Leicester has more than doubled in the last five years, Mr Salkeld has said. With those rise in numbers, there have been 26 accidents involving cyclists at Leicester’s top 20 accidents spots over the last three years.

There will be another Building Cycling Cultures event taking place in June 2012 in Leicester.
