I love my bike because…it makes me feel free.

Thursday Throwdown

Why do you love your bicycle? Is it because it makes you fast, is it because it keeps you alive or has pink fenders?

These were three of the responses given by fans of the Going Going Bike facebook page in this week’s Thursday Throwdown.

However, it was “freedom” which stood out most strikingly and consistently amongst the responses. “Freedom to explore”, “free from tube”, “free, fun, eco-friendly”, “Go anywhere, anytime.” The sense of freedom that a bike gives is remarkable and a feeling that is deeply held amongst cyclists.

Without coming over all William Wallace, it seems that for cyclists it is possible for all sorts of aspects of their lives to be imperfect but on the bicycle “you will never take our FREEEDDDOOMMM!”

It is the freedom to travel great distances under ones own power. The freedom to move quickly amongst the traffic. The freedom to not be beholden to any other form of transport. And also the freedom to move around at no cost.

There is also a sense of joy that cyclists experience whilst on their bike. This releases and frees the soul and provides an altogether more emotional freedom. The freedom to be carefree and happy.

It should come as no surprise then that “freedom” featured so consistently in the Throwdown responses.
