Final preparation for the Raid Pyreneen

Cycling in the hills

We are flying out tomorrow to Biarritz for the start of our Raid Pyreneen. Very excited. The trip has been planned for several months and the training has built up nicely in recent weeks.

Unfortunately the settled weather seems to have given way to showers and so we may get a little wet on our ride from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

My final packing has been done and it turns out there is a lot of kit that you need to take. The final list of kit and clothes being taken includes (in no particular order):

  • Bike (recently serviced with new bottom bracket at Sigma Sports (they are great))
  • Garmin Edge 800 with each day of routes loaded up
  • Food (several boxes of my favourite on-bike snacks (Nature Valley Cereal bars and School Bars (sort of fruity) and some energy powder to create energy drinks)
  • Bike shoes
  • Helmet
  • Short and long finger gloves
  • Overshoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Softshell jacket
  • Lots of socks (including Solo and Rapha merino socks)
  • Two pairs of shorts (maybe I should have taken more)
  • Three base layers (two merino, one polyester)
  • Three jerseys (including the jerseys made for our ride)
  • Gilet and windjacket
  • Arm and knee warmers
  • Insulated Tights
  • Skull cap and two cycling caps
  • Asos Chamois Cream and Rapha Embrocation (the latter has never been used and I am not entirely certain what it is (perhaps the subject of a future post?)?)
  • Sundries: pump, spare tubes, Rapha Great Road Climbs of the Pyrenees, route maps, dossards

With any luck I haven’t forgotten anything too important and Ryanair delivers all our baggage safely to Biarritz International.
