Cyclists don Santa suits for a Claus

It may not be snowing down in the Columbian city of Cali (in fact its very hot and humid), but it didn’t stopped residents donning Santa suits to try and break the world record for the most amount of people cycling with a Santa costume on last weekend.

Unfortunately the residents of Cali missed the 8,000 world record target with the Guinness Book of Records adjudicator saying that only 5,200 participants had passed its stringent Santa clothing tests.

All was not lost though for the residents of the city, Cali did break the world record for the most people exercising in one place with 192,000 people participating. The city also had 65,000 cyclists forming the longest cycling line in the world on the same day.

Closer to home, we’d like to highlight a Santa charity ride taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland, later on in December.

Taking place at the city’s Comber Greenway, organisers hope to have 500 people of all ages riding in Santa outfits, double the number of participants that rode in the 2009 ride.

The ride, which is in aid of Bowel Cancer Research, takes place on December 28. It ironically had to be cancelled from an earlier date on December 5 due to the first fall of snow this winter in Northern Ireland.

If you happen to be in Belfast over the festive period and want to join in or show support, please register with the Connswater Community Greenway team at [email protected]
