Cycling Underwear – revealed

Underwear offense

The Going Going Biking blog grapples with subjects that others refuse to confront. Questions of cycle style are amongst the most thorny and to date we’ve taken on a range of issues (including the highly emotive issue of trouser rolling). Today’s issue is cycling underwear.

Cycling underwear? Why is this relevant, interesting or (quite frankly) an appropriate topic? Well we have noticed, as you might have too, that with more casual cyclists taking to the roads certain cycling clothing offences are becoming more prolific.

Chief amongst them is visible underwear. This can be a bloke’s boxer shorts riding high and billowing in the breeze behind or a girl’s pants. It’s (generally) not a sight that fellow cyclists want to see. Although, when you are pedalling directly behind someone, it can be difficult to avoid.

The cause is obvious. Casual cyclists don’t wear appropriate clothing to guard against this misdemeanour. In the days when mostly ‘serious’ cyclists were commuting, lycra predominated. Now cyclists wear low-slung jeans, loose skirts and other knicker revealing clothes.

What is to be done? Educating cyclists must be top of the agenda. However, with the Bikeability course under threat the most obvious channel is about to be removed.  Boris bikes should perhaps display a warning (under the beware of lorries warning?). Cycle clubs could be activated to engage with their communities. But what else can be done to arrest this alarming development?
