Cycling on track with Scalextric

You never forget your inner child they say, so I was a tad bit excited when a friend of mine told me he had seen a cycle version of the classic slot-car racing game Scalextric on press day at the London Toy Fair, which is currently taking place at London Olympia.
A mock-up featuring the toy’s trademark slotted grooves around a mini velodrome and a pair of crouching riders is indeed on show at the Hornby stand at the Toy Fair.

The cycle version forms part of a tie-up with the London Olympics Organising Committee that will see Scalextric’s makers, Hornby, also produce officially licensed products for its Hornby train sets and Corgi model cars. The cycling version of Scalextric will feature full Team GB branding.
This limited edition Scalextric set is scheduled to go on sale in September, but will cost £74.99 (Do toys cost this much these days? Glad I am not a parent).
At that price, I guess the product is aimed more at collectors than anything. Who knows it might end up as an auction piece on here.
By the way I had Scalextric as a child. Despite only having a figure of eight track, it provided hours of fun until the controller inevitably broke.
