Cycle training for learner drivers?
ShareThis
Learner drivers should have to cycle first. This is what is being proposed by a new campaign by BikeAware, the brainchild of veteran cycle campaigner David Love.
In his manifesto for BikeAware, Mr Love is calling on the government to introduce cycle awareness training for anyone who wants to obtain a UK driving licence.
Candidates would need to sit a new module including (unless exempted by prior Bikeability training or disability) on road cycling, before passing their driving test. Mr Love claims that if BikeAware was implemented it would involve minimal cost.
Bike Aware is asking whether you agree or disagree with its objectives at its website.

Twenty years ago, the majority of learner drivers had been cycling on the road for ten years or so before started learning to drive. Most of those drivers are still on the roads, they no more cycle friendly that the newer generations of learner drivers. Tighter enforcement of the current driving laws, would probably be more effective. I speak as a cyclist and former driving instructor.
