Cycle could take the sludge out of slum life
Taking stock in Road Safety Week
This week sees the commencement of the Ashes series between the cricketers of England and Australia. It also marks the end of a journey for Oli Broom, who has been cycling for over a year to make it for that first ball of the Ashes series to be delivered at Brisbane Cricket Ground (The Gabba) on Thursday.
Oli started his journey from Lord’s Cricket Ground in London in October last year and has cycled over 25,000km and over 21 countries on route to Australia. With routes across Europe, Africa and Asia behind him, Oli is now on the final leg to Brisbane with 750km to go (as of Sunday).
Of course, Oli has not been doing this monumental ride for no reason. He is supporting two charities in his quest, The Lord’s Taverners and the British Neurological Research Trust. His hope is to reach a £100,000 target.
Oli has gained full support of the MCC, which devised the rules of cricket and owns the Lords Cricket Ground. They gave him a replica Ashes Urn to accompany him across the globe to Australia. Oli also travelled with a cricket bat allowing him to educate locals wherever he travelled about the finer points of cricket.
Oli, we salute you here for your efforts, and lets hope England don’t disappoint against the Aussies on that first morning.
If you wish to donate in support of Oli’s efforts, donate here.
Excellent idea. Hope it takes off. Cheers.
