Benefits of the commuting cyclist

For many people their cycling involvement stops and ends with the daily commute to work. Currently, according to UK government figures, only 3% of people in Britain cycle to work. But with the right organisation and incentives this figure could reach 40%, the government claims.

The reasons why businesses should support a cycle to work scheme are not only for the tax benefits. There are supplementary advantages for a business.  One being an employer can gain from average commute times falling among their employees leading to savings in terms of lost working time.

This week is the UK is Commute Smart week in the UK.  To coincide with Commute Smart week, analysis from trade union body, the TUC, found the average time spent travelling to and from work is now 47 minutes and 48 seconds – the lowest figure for a decade. In 2006, the average commute time at its highest was 52 minutes and 36 seconds. Using figures from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), the TUC has calculated that £339m worth of working time is spent travelling to and from work every day.

Cycling has in part been credited for the drop in commuting times with the take up of cycle to work schemes by businesses praised for cutting down both journey times and carbon emissions by Commute Smart week organiser Work Wise.

“Policies such as encouraging cycling and walking, are enabling staff to get to work in a better way and in the process saving time and money whilst improving health and well-being. Being green and commuting smart have never made more commercial sense,” said Work Wise UK Chief Executive, Phil Flaxton.

To try and persuade companies to encourage more employees to cycle to work, the government has set up the “Cycle to Work Guarantee” initiative. The guarantee makes a business case and outlines the benefits for employers to encourage bicycle use by employees.

By signing up to the guarantee, companies agree to provide staff with safe bike storage, changing rooms, cycling lessons and access to bike-repair facilities, as well as access to buying a bike via a cycle to work scheme.

Making the workplace a more cycle friendly environment will help the workforce become healthier, greener and most importantly for a business, more productive.
