RIDE24

Just a quick update on the RIDE24 event that Going Going Bike supported and featured on these blogs previously. The event, now in its third year and organised by children’s charity Action Medical Research and supported by IG Markets, took place last weekend (June 18-19).

Overall 50 teams and nine lone cyclists took part in RIDE24, which saw participants ride through the night and braving heavy showers in the battle to see who could travel furthest in 24 hours around the Goodwood Motor Circuit track.

Winners

The overall event winners were a four-man team from the University of Birmingham, who completed 230 laps and travelled a total of 552 miles. They were seven laps ahead of second placed TL Sports Events while Outside5 Biketarts came third.

In addition to their trophy, the University of Birmingham team of Xavier Disley, Nick Pilborough, Oliver Wilson and Mark Brown also won a free place in the French 24 Heures Velo event at the Le Mans motor racing circuit in August. Team Basingstoke was the winning veteran’s team, while CycloProPain – a team of doctors – taking the mixed team title

Qualification for RAAM

Soloist Jean Christophe Teppaz was the leading solo rider and now qualifies for the Race Across America (RAAM) event, the world-famous ultra-endurance cycling race. Second placed solo rider Chris Armishaw also qualified and will take part in RAAM 2012  and aims to raise £50,000 for Action Medical Research.

Chris Boardman takes part

Former pro-rider and British cycling personality Chris Boardman joined riders on for the final few hours of racing before presenting the trophies at the end. He is now considering in putting a team himself for next year.

Cyclists participating in RIDE24 raised money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. The event is expected to raise more than £70,000 for the charity.
